Overview

  • A shop owner wants to spread the word about their product but has no idea how to make a video or what budget it takes.
  • From a single bottle of oil, a film that conveys its appeal takes shape.
  • The video tells how a small shop's product reaches someone as a story of the town.

Planning

What to convey, and how viewers should feel. We finish everything from structure to motion, voice and sound with a clear intent.

Show the change instead of explaining it

The shop before sales picked up. A steaming coffee and a smartphone00:09
Before sales picked up. A warm cup the owner had time to enjoy
After orders increased. The owner smiling with a cold coffee in hand01:20
After orders increased. The same cup, gone cold with no time to drink it
Aim
Convey the busyness and the joy through small daily changes rather than sales figures
Direction during production
"Make it so you can feel the coffee has gone cold"
Adjustment
Change the steam, brightness and facial expression, and contrast before and after with the same cup

First cut and final cut

The first cut is option C, made when three music options had been produced. Before the final cut, we revised the bird's movement in the opening, the song and ambient sound, the on-screen text and more.

Scene 01

Catch the eye in the first moment

Before | flies off to the side
Five opening frames before the revision. The bird flies off to the side
Final version | flies straight at the camera and passes overhead
Five opening frames of the final version. The bird flies straight at the camera and passes overhead
Aim
Catch the viewer's attention the moment playback starts
Direction during production
"Have it come straight at us. So the viewer feels like ducking"
Adjustment
Keep the flying motion while tightening the direction of approach, the distance and the timing of the pass
Scene 02

Keep fixing details after completion

Before the fix. The text on the smartphone screen is garbledBefore
Garbled text on the smartphone screen
After the fix. The garbled text removed and the screen repairedAfter
Garbled text repaired

Items fixed after completion

  • Costume continuity
  • On-screen text
  • Voice intonation
  • Volume of the song and narration
  • Ambient sound of rain, bread and coffee
Direction during production
"The text on the smartphone at 1:09 is garbled"
"While the narration plays, the song should keep going a little quieter"

Finishing how it sounds

Compare the voice, the delivery and the song before the revision and in the finished version.

VOICE

From a theatrical voice to natural narration

Direction during production
"The brand copy is fine, but everything else sounds hammy"
"Try taking out more of the intonation. Just short of a monotone"
Adjustment
Analyze the voice and find the version where the delivery got fast and the pauses tightened (six lines totaling 15.5 s → 9.9 s). Go back to the version before it and fix one line at a time

First cut. Lines delivered with strong emotion
"We made something good. That alone didn't get it to anyone"

Low, calm narration
"We made something good. That alone didn't sell it"

READING

Listening again down to how a single word is read

Direction during production
"It sounds like shopin, not shohin" (shohin is the Japanese word for product)
Adjustment
Keep the kanji in the captions as they are, spell out the reading in hiragana only in the voice script, and regenerate

The version where "shohin" in "conveying the product's features" sounds like "shopin"

The version with the reading specified as "shohin"

MUSIC

Keep the song going under the narration

Direction during production
"While the narration plays, I want the song to keep going a little quieter"
"I want to add ambient sound"
Adjustment
Remake the track with lyrics throughout. Lower it by about 5 dB only under the voice. Layer in the room tone of the shop, rain, footsteps and coffee sounds.

0:41–0:50. Accompaniment only, with no singing
"Why not try talking to someone first?"

The same section. The song keeps playing softly and the sounds of the shop come in
"Why not ask for advice first?"
